A More Effective Freshman Orientation

Encourage involvement

  • Work with Greek life and student organizations to incorporate an efficient orientation

Include basic knowledge every K-State student should have

  • Sharing the history & mission of K-State as the first land grant institution with equal opportunities for all 

  • Spreading school spirit through the Alma Mater, Fight Song and the Wabash 

  • Educating about resources available to students such as Lafene, SAFERIDE, Cats Cupboard, etc. 

  • Sharing information about scholarships and financial assistance

Recruitment

Facilitate partnerships between the Office of Recruitment and Admissions and multicultural student groups, collegiate ambassadors, and members of other student orgs to personalize campus visits.

 

Expand outreach and recruitment efforts in "small-town" and out-of-state high schools

  • Invite large groups or entire high schools to campus to facilitate a comfortable and enjoyable environment for rural students 

  • Host a mini "Wildcat Warm-up" day for these students 

  • Utilize current students as ambassadors by establishing a student organization focused on KSU recruitment and retention 

  • Establish an exchange program with tuition benefits for other Midwest states

Promote the K-State Land Grant Mission

  • Promote diversity and inclusion events and efforts from student orgs across campus.

  • Showcase the hundreds of unique and diverse student organizations across campus to prospective and current students.

  • Encourage an open-minded culture across campus where we can continue to grow and learn together.

  • Spread awareness of K-State’s rich history as a trailblazing University.

Streamline K-State Website and Online Resources

  • Increase transparency with grades and assignments by using Canvas as the universal tool across programs and classes

  • Revive KSIS to make it a more friendly platform 

  • Utilize the KSU app for more effective mobile communication between the University and students 

2. Purpose

Helping students connect with the K-State family to find their purpose and passion on campus through degree programs, student orgs, projects, service, etc.

Ensure Independent Student Orgs are Supported & Represented

  • Create a well-defined and better organized structure that is mutually beneficial and agreed upon by student organization stakeholders and the University 

  • Ensure Greek life and other independent student organizations are recognized for the value they bring to the institution with the resources they need to flourish

Help Students Connect & Feel Welcomed in the K-State Family

Offer more events for students to meet one another in degree programs and across student orgs 

  • Small orientation classes within each major

  • College-based career and club fairs

  • Mentorship program within specific colleges and degree programs

Engagement in Student Organizations 

  • Student organization town halls

  • Improve communication with SGA and CSI

  • Provide an opportunity for student leaders from various organizations to connect

Help Students Develop Professional & Occupationally Relevant Skills

  • Offer more Career Center opportunities and events

  • Increase alumni engagement and mentorship opportunities through degree programs and the Career Center

  • Introduce a "Prosperity and Occupational Relevance" section to the K-State 8 curriculum

Student Wellness and Mental Health

  • Ensure all professors, advisors and University staff have training and knowledge of Lafene and CAPS resources 

  • Continue to advocate for 2 mental health days per semester

  • Develop a safe and effective strategic plan to transition out of COVID restrictions back to full functionality for the Rec and intramural activities
